This week’s reviews includes a positive one for Harper Simon, song of Paul, a less positive one for the Cold War Kids’ fourth album, a reasonable score for Depeche Mode’s 13th album and first in 4 years, four stars for British Sea Power’s new one about “Franciscan monks, ketamine and French female bodybuilders turned erotic movie stars” and another downhill slide for The Flaming Lips.

#sxswspecial – Four new bands that impressed most at the SXSW music festival in Texas last weekend.

Majical Cloudz
You wouldn’t want to meet Devon Welsh down a dark alley. His piercing eyes and bald head are an intense look but then he opens his mouth and beautiful noise comes out. Teaming up with Matthew Otto for stark lyrically-deep music was a very good idea. The dark side of the soul.

Empress Of
Lorely Rodriguez’s cloudy gloopy electronic-pop is an infectious blast.The Brooklyn resident will get compared to Grimes a lot but you sense a studied history of soul and pop music in her own tracks.

Parquet Courts
If it’s guitars you want, these Brooklyn-based Texans have you covered. Their high-energy shouty post-punk harks back to classic rock but has a fresh twist. In Austin, they played Mellow Johnny’s, a bike shop owned by Lance Armstrong where his yellow jerseys still remain on display.

Watching the Danish 24-year-old Karen Marie Ørsted on stage is akin to watching a kid dance around her bedroom except those bright fun songs are hers and the voice is impeccable. The ponytail-swinging singer has the complete pop package.
