The age of musical dilemmas

, , No Comment

With a new Sufjan Stevens album called The Age of Adz on the way this month, his U.S record label Asthmatic Kitty issued a plea asking fans not to buy the new record through Amazon as the online shopping giant will purportedly be selling the album for a very low price.

In a lengthy email discussing the positive and negative aspects of discount pricing, the label takes a stance by saying they feel “the work that our artists produce is worth more than a cost of a latte.” They have a point – music should be worth more than that. Music is sadly losing its value. You can blame illegal downloads or a slow moving industry or supermarket chains who buy up chart CDs at a discount and sell them at a loss (shutting down independent record shops in the process) or you can attribute it to the ever-changing media-devouring landscape. Some people will blame bloggers like myself.

, , No Comment

Free Music Week
Dublin-based music blog Quarter Inch curated a week’s worth of blog posts where a light is shone on artists who give away music for free. There are interviews, mixtapes, guest posts and of course, downloads from acts like CoolRunnings, Coma Cinema, Hunter-Gatherer, Popical Island, and Hipster Youth.

The Social Network soundtrack
While we all wait to like or dislike the upcoming film The Social Network based on Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and directed by David Fincher, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have released a free five track sampler from the soundtrack.

Warpaint
A female foursome from Los Angeles who are about to release their debut album The Fool, Warpaint make what’s been described as ambient rock. That is rock that is a little more soothing than the norm yet still occasionally manages to sound like they are channelling Nirvana. Wu Tang’s RZA is a big fan apparently as are The XX.

Strands
Known as a producer of many great Irish albums in recent times and a musician in the band Halfset, Stephen Shannon has struck out on his own with a new band called Strands. An album is out in late October and the track you have to hear first is the playful instrumental Temper.

Witch House generator
You need a snappy band name for your new “witch-house project”. This site can help. Proving that all you need is a vaguely foreboding name with a triangle in it instead of an ‘A’, my new band project will now be known as SKELETON GΔ†ES. Nice.

The Nowness
Billing itself as a quality online multimedia magazine with the tagline “daily exclusives for you to love”, The Nowness features considered features on art, travel, lifestyle, culture, music and fashion from high-profile contributors like Bret Easton Ellis.

Video: El Guincho – Bombay

, , No Comment

Barcelona musician El Guincho’s new video contains all of this: naked sparkler dancing, a guy jumping into a pool with a gun, a girl cracking eggs off her head, usage of a vacuum cleaner where it shouldn’t be allowed, the murder of a plush toy and lots of nudity. Definitely not safe for watching in work.
